Beginner’s lesson: Position

Let’s keep things simple: After you learn the difference between pocket aces and deuce-seven off-suit, you should focus on position.

I’ll save you some more trouble. After analyzing thousands of hands, most players win most of their money and lose the least of their money by being the last person to act after each street.

You know the big blind, the small blind and the button. Learn to love the button in addition to the cutoff and the hijack — the two spots to the right of the button.

Here is a perfect example of position poker: Demidov’s position bluff

Demidov read the bet Dennis Phillips made on the flop as weak and acted accordingly. Even though Phillips is a big favorite before the flop, he can’t do what Demidov did when the flop comes down. Demidov has all the information when it’s his turn to bet. That’s the advantage of playing in position.

So stay disciplined and if you’re going to call with that 10-7 suited, make sure you do it in position.
