Sometimes, after playing a bunch of mid-stakes tournaments, you’ll see a bad beat and the looming loser, now an observer, will blame his rotten luck on the software. Online poker is rigged, he’ll say. As if the powers-that-be want him to lose. Those insane beats happen in live poker as well. Don’t believe me? Take a few examples from this year’s WSOP main event final table.

Here’s just a few of those beats:

Hand No. 1 — James Akenhead raises all-in with K-Q. Steven Beglieter calls and Eric Buchman re-raises. Begleiter folds. Buchman shows A-K.

Flop: 2-3-J

Turn: K

River: Q, Akenhead doubles.

Hand No. 2 — White three players left, Joe Cada re-raises all-in with pocket twos. Antoine Saout calls with queens. Saout has Cada covered.

Flop: 7-2-9

The turn and the river are no help to Saout. Had Saout won that hand, which he was a 4-to-1 favorite, it would have been the Frenchman heads-up against Darvin Moon.

Hand No. 3 — It’s Cada again. This was an earlier hand when he was all-in with another small pocket pair — 3-3 — against Jeff Shulman, who was playing super-tight and called with J-J.

Flop: Three in the window and no help for Shulman.

Shulman was crippled and the win propelled Cada to heads-up play.

Hand No. 4 — The saddest hand of the tournament. Ivey chews on an apple and shoves with A-K. Moon calls with A-Q.

Flop: The dealer peels off the flop and puts a queen in the door. Q-6-6.

No king comes and Ivey gets knocked out.

Hand No. 5 — Soon after eliminating Ivey, Moon calls Begleiter’s all-in with A-Q again. Begleiter shows pocket queens. Click to watch.

Flop: 7-4-8

Turn: 3

And in full, what some would call online poker fashion, an ace lands on the river and knocks Begleiter out.
