Born on November 12, 1986 and hailing from Florida, USA, Jason first began learning how to play poker in high school.
Upon graduating from high school, Jason decided to go to college to pursue his ambition to become a Maths teacher. But his career path soon took a sharp turn when he realised his success at playing poker.
His first money finish at a major tournament came in 2008 at the European Poker Tour (EPT) San Remo Main Event – the largest live poker tournament ever played in Italy. He outplayed the likes of poker pros Dario Minieri and William Thorson at the final table to take down the EPT title and a cool €869,000.
In the following EPT season, at the 2008 EPT Barcelona Main Event, Jason made his second appearance at an EPT final table and finished in sixth place, earning him €227,800.
His successful streak in Europe continued in 2008, making the final table at the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) £5,000 pot-limit Omaha event and earning £26,812 for his eighth place finish. He also won the EPT London£20,000 High Roller Event, otherwise known as the 2008 £1 Million Showdown, earning him an additional £516,000. The final table included runner-up John Juanda – who had just over a week before won the 2008 WSOPE Main Event - as well as online pros Mike “SirWatts” Watson and Isaac Haxton and other notable pros such as Scotty Nguyen, David Benyamine and Isabelle Mercier.
At the 2009 WSOP, Jason won the $1,500 pot-limit Omaha event, earning him his first WSOP bracelet and $237,415 in prize money. That year, he also finished in fourth place at the WSOPE Main Event, earning him £267,267.
In total, Jason has cashed 14 times at the WSOP.
His success in poker is not limited to live tournaments. On September 21, 2010, Jason won his first World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) bracelet in a $1,050 no-limit Hold’em event, beating a field of 3122 players and winning $435,862.07 in prize money.
There is no mistaking Jason Mercier’s presence at the poker table. He consistently appears to be cool, calm and collected. But that certainly doesn’t make him complacent. On the contrary, as Jason said in a recent interview: ”It was kind of humbling to realise that you can’t just expect to win everything and you really have to focus.” And it’s that focus that will continue to see Jason enjoying success in the game.
